A vibrant, pulsating metropolis in the heart of south East Asia. A city of culture and contrasts. Whether exploring the labyrinth of the world famous weekend market, watching the sharks and stingrays cruise by in the Siam Paragon oceanarium, grooving the night away in one of the myriad of Bangkok clubs or simply taking a bowl of tom yum gung at a street stall whilst you watch the world go by, Bangkok is a city that never fails to amaze and entertain.

 Nestled on the banks of the Chao  Phraya river, Bangkok became the official capital and seat of the Thai government in 1782. Foreign visitors increased in numbers through the 19th century and by the 1860’s many European nations and North America had formed trade alliances with Thailand. Growth continued with the construction of the railway and tramway. Bangkok’s market districts developed into large residential areas and during the Vietnam conflict massive foreign investment enabled improvement of the Don Mueang airport and the cities highways.

Since the 1960’s Bangkok has transformed into a  first world city with shopping centres, eateries and nightlife that would be equally at home in London, New York or Paris. Those who wear their luggage can still find a room for a few dollars a night before heading off to the islands to live “The beach” experience. The more well heeled traveler has a wide array of 5 star accommodation, with service to match, from which to choose. There is plenty for those in between at a fraction of the rates you would pay at home.

The central business and entertainment districts of  Sukhumvit and Silom are easily explored on the ever expanding skytrain and subway systems. Exploring further afield air-con taxis, motorbikes and the infamous Tuk Tuks will find you before you even know you want one.

So you have strolled the grounds of the Grand palace and Wat Pho, taken a trip down the river, shopped yourself silly from Siam square to the Emporium and it’s time for dinner. Tasty Thai street food on any given corner? A rooftop Indian meal at the Rembrandt overlooking the city at night? A quick fast food fix from any one of dozens of well known chains?  Thai, French, Italian, Lebanese, Japanese, Cajun, Chinese? Bangkok has it all to choose from.

Finished dinner? Time to explore the nightlife. Let’s split a bottle of Chang beer served over ice with the locals in the street café and practice our Thai whilst we decide where to go. Do we fancy an evening in the more raunchy areas of Nana, Soi cowboy and Patpong with bright lights, loud music and VERY friendly staff? A few cocktails in a chic lounge bar or simply a few pints in the Irish pub before we hit a club with Thai and international DJs spinning the latest tunes? Whether you wish to sip champagne at a piano recital or ride a rodeo bull whilst downing tequila shots, surrounded by scantily clad waitresses, Bangkok will not disappoint.
